Residents in Capel Dewi are seeing the benefits of a major repair scheme on the main road which links the village to Carmarthen.

The essential works included a new 135-metre retaining wall along a section of the B4300 close to the River Towy.

The wall together with additional works to prevent further erosion problems along the Cystanog bends cost in excess of £672,000.

The scheme was much-needed after a large tree alongside the highway collapsed into the river in 2008 making the road unsafe for motorists.

Traffic lights were in place for a long time as the council secured funding through its capital budget; and whilst the works were carried out the road had to be closed and traffic diverted.

Executive Board Member for Technical Services Cllr Colin Evans said: “This was a vital scheme for the local community and has caused a lot of inconvenience for residents over the last few years. I am delighted that the road is finally open, making life much easier for residents.

“Budgets are being reduced year on year and it is becoming increasingly difficult to be able to fund such schemes.”

Local Member Cllr Elwyn Williams said the completion of the project had made a big difference to residents.

“Whilst the works were being carried out it put an extra 15 minutes on your journey, and that was for both directions,” he said.

“Unfortunately the heavy rain last year caused the opening to be delayed so the diversions were in place for longer than expected.

“Since the road has reopened it has made such a difference for residents and local businesses too.”
