The GE & ME Voter Profile

The General Election and … a Self-Employed, Twenty-Something

For our first voter profile we asked a self-employed, twenty-something man from Llanelli to outline his general election 2015 voting intentions.

We discovered that “Mr A” is an undecided voter who intends to listen carefully to each party’s policies in the forthcoming series of televised leaders’ debates.

See the transcript of our interview with Mr A below to find out more about his general election plans, including why he feels let down by Nick Clegg and is least likely to vote UKIP.

Interview Transcript

Q: Have you decided which party you will vote for in May’s general election?

A: No

Q: What would persuade you to vote for a party?

A: I would vote for the party that would be able to explain their aims and objectives clearly, without having to keep explaining themselves. I understand that, whichever party is elected, they will not be able to change the country overnight. I am prepared to give each party an equal chance in explaining what they have to offer. I will be weighing up everything they have to say and eliminating parties until I find the right one during debates. I applied the same process last time and voted Lib Dem. Then I learned not to trust a politician’s promises.

Q: Which party are you least likely to vote for in the general election and why?

A: UKIP because Nigel Farage constantly says the wrong thing. He could get the country into trouble with other countries with the way he runs his mouth. Also, I believe we should still be in Europe.

Q: Do you think the current Welsh Labour Government have successfully governed Wales?

A: I don’t know enough to answer this question.

Q: Do you think that the Tory/Lib Dem coalition government have successfully governed the UK?

A: Yes

Q: Why do you think that the Tory/Lib Dem coalition government have successfully governed the UK?

A: They haven’t made it much worse than it was before. Although I am still angry at Nick Clegg for breaking his promises the coalition have done a lot of good under their power. If anything equal opportunities is more equal now than ever!

Q: Do you think that the UK should remain part of Europe?

A: Yes

Q: Why do you think that the UK should stay in Europe?

A: Why would we want to leave? Personally, in this day and age, I believe the whole world should be united and help each other out!

Q: Do you think that Wales should be fully devolved from the U.K.?

A: I don’t understand devolution enough to be able to comment on this.

Q: Which two of the following policy topics mean the most to you and would persuade you to vote for a party?

(i) The NHS;

(ii) Economy;

(iii) Immigration;

(iv) Education; or

(v) Welfare

A: The NHS and education

Q: Regardless of the party itself, which party leader do you believe to be the most capable Prime Minister and why?

A: David Cameron

Q: Would you choose to vote/not vote for a party if you liked/disliked their leader?

A: Yes! I would happily vote Labour but I do not believe in Ed Milliband. He had to think about it when asked if he thought his brother David should have been made the Labour Party leader!
