Carmarthenshire County Council Wants Your Views on Dog Orders

People in Carmarthenshire are being asked for their views on new orders for controlling dogs in public places.

The council is consulting on Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) which can be used to tackle the problem of irresponsible dog ownership.

Residents are being urged to tell us what they think by completing a short survey.

A number of new powers were created under the Anti-social, Crime and Policing Act 2014 to give local authorities greater flexibility in tacking irresponsible dog owners and incidents involving dogs.

Some replace existing powers while others are new; for example, they can be used to exclude dogs from certain areas or require dogs to be on leads.

Executive Board Member for Environmental and Public Protection Cllr Jim Jones said: “We want to consult with the public to find out if there is a need for further dog controls in Carmarthenshire.

“I know that residents feel very strongly about some of these issues, not only from previous consultation we have carried out, but also from talking to people when I am out and about.

“It is important that we find the right balance; one which reflects the needs of the public against that of dog owners. I would urge people to please fill in the survey, your views are important to help us reach a decision that is right for Carmarthenshire.”

As well as seeking public opinion, the council will be consulting with partner organisations and interested parties such as the Police and Crime Commissioner, town and community councils, AMs and MPs, The Kennel Club and The Dogs Trust.
