After 45 horrible years in captivity, the tide may finally be turning for Lolita, the world’s loneliest orca. Sign Maddie’s petition to help Lolita today.

Public opposition to keeping orcas in captivity is growing, and just last month the U.S. government ruled that she should receive endangered species protection, along with the rest of her pod, which lives off the coast of Washington state.

Animal rights activists have filed a lawsuit, alleging that Lolita’s treatment at the Miami Seaquarium violates the Animal Welfare Act. Particularly troubling is her tank, which is the smallest currently in use for orcas. Care2 member Maddie L started a petition to get the USDA to enforce their rules about tank size and help convince the Seaquarium to release Lolita back to the Pacific ocean.

Sign Maddie’s petition to pressure the USDA to do the right thing for the world’s loneliest orca.

A hearing will be held in Miami this month to determine whether Lolita’s treatment is indeed illegal under the Animal Welfare Act – your signature is needed to convince the federal government to follow their own rules and protect Lolita.
