The Leader of Carmarthenshire County Council is urging people to switch off their lights as part of Earth Hour day.
Cllr Kevin Madge is backing WWF Cymru’s one hour switch off day this Saturday (March 28) at 8.30pm.
The worldwide initiative is not only to save electricity but also to bring people together to celebrate the planet and how we need to protect it.
Research shows our reliance on high carbon fossil fuel like coal, oil and gas is over-heating the atmosphere and affecting the climate.
A record number of 162 countries celebrated Earth Hour in 2014, with many of the world’s most famous landmarks going dark for the hour. Many Welsh iconic buildings joined world landmarks in the campaign including; Castell Coch, Caernarfon Castle and Caerphilly Castle; the Newport Transporter Bridge, the Senedd, Cardiff Central Library, St David’s Hotel, the National Library of Wales, Sherman Cymru Theatre, and IKEA.
Over 4,600 schools and 2 million students took part across the UK as well as over 1000 businesses and organisations. The event received great attention online with #passthepanda going viral, reaching over 45 million on Twitter alone.
Council corporate energy officer Neil Evans said: “We are keen to support Earth Hour. The county council is doing a lot of work within its own buildings to reduce its energy consumption. We have invested nearly £2m. Every single day is an Earth Hour for us.”
Cllr Kevin Madge said: “I am pleased to confirm Carmarthenshire County Council’s support for this year’s Earth Hour. We have supported this campaign over recent years in Carmarthenshire and will be making arrangements to ensure all unnecessary building lighting is switched off from 8.30pm-9.30pm pm this Saturday.
“As an organisation we are committed to reducing our environmental footprint something which is reflected in reductions in our –energy consumption, increased recycling rates, investment in renewable energy and deployment of electric vehicles.”
