Major counterfeit tobacco haul seized in Swansea

TRADING standards in Swansea has unearthed a major counterfeit tobacco manufacturing businesses operating in the city.

The Swansea Council investigation has led to the seizure of more than 170 kg of tobacco along with packing equipment including plastic pouches and holographic stickers.

The counterfeit tobacco is thought to have a combined street value well in excess of £100,000.

Trading standards officers made the discovery at a flat in Richardson Street in the Sandfields part of the city.

During the operation with South Wales Police, a large quantity of money was also seized.

Cllr Mark Child, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Healthy City, said: “This is a significant find for our trading standards team and one which has resulted in a large quantity of counterfeit tobacco being removed from the streets of Swansea.

“This type of activity has links to serious organised crime and we are doing what we can in partnership with police to ensure that it’s stopped in Swansea.

“I am pleased that trading standards have been successful and we will continue to take decisive steps to remove illegal tobacco from the streets.”
