In 2014 Ceredigion County Council were awarded funding by the Welsh Government under the Rights of Way Improvement Plan. This enabled the Council to take on an employee to manage a project and to provide funding to improve the Rights of Way network in Ceredigion.
Improvement work has been carried out on 10 miles of footpaths around Rhydlewis, Coed Y Bryn, Lampeter, Ystrad Meurig, Dihewyd and Aberaeron.
Further work was carried out on two bridleway networks. The first between Ciliau Aeron and Felinfach, and the second linking Lledrod to the Ystwyth Trail and Ystrad Meurig. A bridleway linking Llanfihangel Y Creuddyn to Pisgah was also upgraded. 15 miles of bridleway are now easily accessible at these locations.
25 pedestrian gates and 28 field gates have been installed along with three bridges. Other works included drainage, pioneer clearance and surfacing work. Most of the work was accomplished using local contractors but a substantial contribution was undertaken by volunteers from Lampeter and Aberystwyth Ramblers.
These volunteers contributed over 400 hours of work and have installed 14 gates and a bridge. They also cleared a great deal of scrub and fallen branches, carried out minor drainage work and installed numerous steps and way-marking posts. The project is now drawing to a close. The volunteers’ contribution has been invaluable to the success of the project and has been instrumental in improving the condition of many miles of Public Rights of Way.
