Dog lovers are being reminded that the seasonal Aberavon Beach byelaws will take effect from 1st May to 30th September 2015.
Throughout this period, the area of beach which runs from the concrete steps near Scarlett Avenue to the breakwater just east of Victoria Road will be classed as dog prohibited and will be off limits for dogs. This includes the beach, lower promenade and the steps.
The byelaw also requires all owners to keep their dogs on a leash whilst on the upper promenade.
Dogs and their owners will still be able to relax and have fun by the sea however, as the area to the west of the concrete steps at the end of the beach nearest to the mouth of the River Neath (near Swn-y-Mor) will still be accessible to them throughout the summer. There they will find more than a kilometre of sandy beach and plenty of dunes to explore.
Dog owners are being asked to play their part in making Aberavon Beach a great place for everyone to spend their leisure time by observing the byelaws. The council will be enforcing the beach byelaws during the summer months. Members of the public who allow their dogs to enter any of the prohibited areas are liable to receive a £75 fixed penalty or even prosecution.
To advise members of the public about the beach byelaws and how to comply with them and as part of their Paws on Patrol initiative, SaferNPT will have a stand outside Port Talbot Lifeguard Station at Aberavon Beach on Friday 24th April. From 9am until 1pm they will be there alongside the Waste Enforcement Officers.
