EXPERT work to refurbish historic Swansea Market’s iconic roof is now over half finished.
R & M Williams, Swansea Council’s contractors for the project, are on schedule to finish the works by the late summer for the benefit of traders and millions of shoppers in years to come.
The project includes refurbishment of the existing barrel roof and renewal of the roof and gable glazing. Essential repairs to the flat roof and roof light lanterns are also being carried out.
Work to renew the north gable that borders Oxford Street is nearing completion and refurbishment of the barrel roof is progressing well. Specialist abseilers have been taking to the roof as part of the on-going project.
A lorry measuring about 100-foot long also recently arrived on site to deliver more roof cladding materials. A giant crane is already being used to help remove old glazing and lower heavy panes of new glass and other materials into place.
Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Regeneration, said: “Swansea Market’s iconic, domed roof has been a feature of the city’s skyline for over half a century, but decades of wear and tear and exposure to the elements had started to take their toll in recent times.
“When we spoke to the market traders last year, they identified the roof’s refurbishment as their top priority, but other works could also follow in future, subject to funding, to further improve the market’s look and feel.
“It’s business as usual for market traders throughout the roof refurbishment works, with access into and around the market hall being maintained at all times. Swansea Market has been at the heart of Swansea life for many years but these on-going works, which are now over half complete, will help preserve the market for many more years and generations to come.”
The £1.9 million roof refurbishment project is being funded by Swansea Council and the Building Enhancement Programme, which is supported by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government.
