Campaign Statement from Nia Griffith MP – Labour Party

Nia Griffith, Labour candidate for Llanelli

I put the interests of local people first, and have the drive and determination to fight hard for the people of the Llanelli constituency. I live in Llanelli, and before I became an MP, I was a teacher in local secondary schools. As your MP, I have been fearless in speaking out for Llanelli, and it would be an honour to represent you again.

In Parliament I have championed Wales, the steel industry, environmental issues and greater economic fairness and equality. Locally I have campaigned successfully to keep A&E doctor–led at Prince Philip Hospital, retain local authority-run care homes and improve flood defences.

I am asking you to help elect a Labour Government, because it is only Labour at UK level which can best reflect the values of Llanelli people, securing fair funding for Wales, ensuring working people get a fair share of economic growth and protecting our frontline services.

Only Labour can grow an economy which works for all, not just the privileged few. We will freeze energy prices, outlaw abusive zero-hours contracts, raise the minimum wage, cut taxes for low and middle earners with a new 10p starter rate, provide more free childcare for working parents, protect pensions and abolish the bedroom tax. We will reverse Tory tax cuts for millionaires and clamp down on tax avoidance. With a Labour UK Government, our Labour Welsh Government will invest an extra £500 million in the Welsh NHS, train an extra 1,000 doctors and nurses, and help our town centre businesses by lowering, then freezing, business rates. We will establish a Business Investment Bank with a local network to invest here in Llanelli. A Labour UK Government will give our manufacturing companies absolute certainty about remaining in the European Union, so they have the confidence to invest in factories here, and safeguard valuable jobs.

Britain needs change. Make no mistake. If the Tories win another term they are determined to turn the clock back to the 1930s, dismantle frontline public services, tear up workers’ hard-earned rights, hitting the working poor hardest, whilst dishing out tax cuts for millionaires. UKIP would go even further with privatising the NHS and scrapping the minimum wage. Only the Labour Party is big enough to offer voters in Llanelli a genuine alternative UK Government. With 650 MPs in Westminster, parties like Plaid with three MPs or Greens with one, simply cannot make a difference.

Only a strong UK Labour Government can deliver the change that Llanelli needs.
