It could be anywhere in the world, Caribbean perhaps?

MILLIONS of people across Latin America and the Caribbean will soon be learning all about traditional Welsh food in Swansea.

A film crew from a company called DIRECTV Sports was in the city on the weekend to record some footage and interviews at the city centre’s historic indoor market.

Their interest was sparked by the number of South Americans currently playing Premier League football for the Swans, including Ecuadorian winger Jefferson Montero and Argentine defender Federico Fernández.

The footage and interviews, focussing on traditional Welsh foods like cockles, laverbread and bara brith, will be included in a programme called ‘Premier Plus’ set for broadcast to over 16.3 million people in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, Venezuela and the Caribbean. The programme will also explore the Liberty Stadium, the success of the Swans and the passion of local football fans.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Regeneration, said: “The continued success of the Swans has done wonders for raising the profile of Swansea Bay as a visitor destination across the world, so huge credit should go to everyone involved with the club.

“The visit of such a major Latin American and Caribbean broadcaster is further proof of the importance and impact of Premier League football status because it leads to a level of exposure that money just can’t buy. It’s hugely encouraging that the programme won’t just focus on football, but will also feature historic attractions like our fantastic indoor market and interviews with local people.

“Tourism is already worth over £360 million a year to the Swansea Bay economy but programmes of this kind further put the destination on the global map. They add to everything we’re already doing to attract as many visitors as possible to Swansea Bay, which is important because more visitors means more spending in our local shops, hotels, bed and breakfasts, pubs, restaurants, tourism attractions and other businesses.

“Swansea Bay is currently enjoying an unprecedented profile that we’re determined to make the most of.”

Caribbean islands where the programme will be shown include Barbados, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and St Lucia.
