Mums and dads in Carmarthenshire are being urged to ditch the disposables and go real.
Council recycling officers teamed up with local real nappy stockist Nappy Go Lucky to spread the word on the benefits of using real nappies.
They were in Guildhall Square in Carmarthen during Real Nappy Week and to celebrate they gave away free trial packs to the first 10 Carmarthenshire parents that went to see them.
Council recycling officer Vicky Guntrip said they spoke to lots of mums and dads, some who did not know you could buy cloth nappies and others, who thought they were old-fashioned.
She said: “We wanted to dispel some of the myths about real nappies; they have come a long way since the terry-towelling and safety pin days. With today’s modern designs, washing machines and the use of flushable liners, using real nappies couldn’t be easier. Many fasten with fabric fasteners or poppers and can be washed along with your baby’s clothes.”
Using real nappies could save parents hundreds of pounds as the average baby wears nappies for two and a half years; a cost of between £650 and £1300* for disposable nappies whereas real nappies cost just £200* for the same period.
Using real real nappies is also benefit the environment – disposable nappies can take up to 500 years to breakdown in landfill. Switching to real nappies will reduce your black bag rubbish and can prevent more than 4,000* disposable nappies from going to landfill.
