A multi-million pound highway scheme which will benefit local communities in Swansea has been praised by top engineering officials during a recent visit to the city.

Swansea Council is in the process of developing the 1.7km Morfa Distributor Road along the banks of the River Tawe in a bid to boost business in the area and relieve congestion on nearby roads.

Members of the Institute of Civil Engineering (ICE) visited the city recently as part of a national campaign to highlight the benefits of civil engineering schemes across the country.

They have used the Morfa Distributor Road as a shining example of what is being achieved in Wales. The new route follows the line of the former canal and links up the Liberty Stadium with New Cut Road.

During the visit, officials from the ICE unveiled a banner at the site as part of the ‘This is Civil Engineering’ campaign. The campaign aims to highlight to the public what civil engineering is and also making a clear link between the work taking place and how it will benefit the community.

Mark Thomas, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transportation, said: “I’m delighted that the ICE has seen fit to recognise the work we are doing to improve transport links in the city and make sure communities benefit.”

“This latest major highway scheme is vital to draw business to the area. A huge amount of work is going on along the Tawe corridor with the ongoing development of housing and the Hafod Copperworks preservation we need to ensure there is proper access for transport.

“The road is also key to relieving congestion along Neath Road which has experienced heavy traffic flows for many years.”

ICE Wales Cymru Chairman Chris Craufurd unveiled the banner at a launch event at the site. He commented: “This is a fantastic project offering huge benefits to the community.

“It really shines a light on civil engineering and its importance to society and this is exactly what we are trying to illustrate through this campaign.”
