SWANSEA residents are being urged to vote this Thursday in the UK Parliamentary general election 2015.

On May 7, 178,607 residents have the chance to vote in either Swansea East, Swansea West or Gower.

Huw Evans, Head of Democratic Services, said: “Swansea Council’s election team is working hard to help ensure everything goes smoothly on election day and in the counts that follow.

“Everything people need to know, from candidates standing to the location of polling stations and how to vote, is on our website at http://www.swansea.gov.uk/voting

“Eligible voters have been sent polling cards but they do not have to take them to polling stations on the day – they are just for information. If you cannot find your card you can still vote by popping along to your local polling station and giving your name, address and date of birth.”

Around 32,000 Swansea residents have chosen to vote by post and have until 10pm on May 7 to return their postal votes. Polling stations for those voting in person are open from 7am to 10pm.

The elections office is open on the day to advise people on issues such as the location of their polling station. They can be contacted on 01792 636123.

The count will begin after polls close at 10pm and results are expected to be announced in the early hours of Friday May 8.  Results including turnout for each ward will published on the council’s website as they are announced at http://www.swansea.gov.uk/generalelection

Residents in the Cockett, Morriston and Townhill wards will also be polled on May 7 for their choice of Councillor in local government by-elections. They will be able to vote by using the same method at the same time as voting in the General Election. Further details are available at http://www.swansea.gov.uk/voting
