Two leading Carmarthenshire Councillors have visited Llandovery Caravan Park to see grant-funded improvements.
The caravan park has carried out improvements to the shower block and converted pitches to all-weather pitches.
The county council provided just over £13,400 through a Strengthening the Tourism Appeal of Rural Carmarthenshire (STARC) grant.
Executive board member for regeneration and leisure Cllr Meryl Gravell and executive board member for rural affairs Cllr Jim Jones visited the site recently to look round the improved facilities.
Llandovery Caravan Park is situated in the centre of Llandovery next to Llandovery Rugby Ground and is run by the Rugby Club committee as a separate enterprise to the Rugby ground. Guests can use the clubhouse and children’s play area.
The caravan park is set in 18 acres of enclosed level ground with washing and shower facilities. There are currently 32 all-weather hard-standing pitches with mains hook-up.
During wet weather the applicant could not accommodate bookings that had been made for the 10 grass pitches as they were waterlogged and the caravans were sinking into the ground. The improvements will increase the amount of bookings and will also increase the park’s turnover.
The park also carried out customer surveys and discovered that the shower block was not suitable for their customer needs.
Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “I’m delighted to see how the grant aid through STARC has helped Llandovery Caravan Park to improve its facilities. This will enable the park to take more visitors and will increase visitors’ enjoyment of the park.”
Cllr Jim Jones said: “Sites such as Llandovery Caravan Park are an important part of the rural economy, bringing visitors into the county where they will also visit other attractions.”
STARC received funding through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013 which is funded by the Welsh Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. The aim was to strengthen Carmarthenshire’s position as a year round premier tourist destination.
