There are a number of mathematical connotations facing the Scarlets this weekend as they look for a sixth place finish in the Guinness PRO12 to secure that all-important European Rugby Champions Cup place for 2015-16.
Despite Connacht and Edinburgh being hot on Scarlets’ heels, in seventh and eighth place respectively, two points from Saturday’s clash against Benetton Treviso will see the Scarlets through to Europe – however the West Wales region will be heading to Italy looking for nothing less than a victory.
Speaking after his side’s 16-6 victory over Cardiff Blues on Sunday afternoon Wayne Pivac said: “We know that next week will be match mentality. It’s about winning by one point, if we win by more than that fantastic but it’s all about getting the result.
“The games are being played at the same time, we won’t have the luxury of saying ‘we’re in’ or ‘we need one point etc.”
Scarlets put in a sparkling performance, scoring seven tries, against Treviso in the third round of the Guinness PRO12 back in September but will be weary of the danger presented by Treviso as they themselves fight it out with Zebre Rugby for their own Champions Cup place.
Pivac went on to say: “It’s about going out there with the mindset that we need to win the game. It’s not about scoring four tries or more, it’s about winning a game of rugby. That’s what this week is all about. You’ve got to win the game first and it’s about building pressure.”
