Green deal scam warning

Local residents are being targeted by companies that claim to be able to help them access funding towards energy saving improvements under the Government’s ‘Green Deal’ scheme.

Pembrokeshire County Council’s Trading Standards has received complaints about businesses cold-calling residents, demanding hundreds of pounds in up-front fees for a bogus energy efficiency assessment.

Attempts to cancel the agreement and seek a refund are often ignored.

Some local authority tenants in Pembrokeshire have also been offered replacement boilers at discounted prices. However the provision and maintenance of boilers is the Council’s responsibility.

If in doubt, the Council’s – and tenant’s – maintenance responsibilities can be found in the tenant’s handbook. Alternatively call the Council on 01437 764551.

The Government’s ‘Green Deal’ scheme requires an assessment to take place in order to qualify for the subsidised energy-saving improvements.

This assessment must be carried out by an authorised ‘Green Deal’ Assessor who has been approved under the scheme.

For more information on the ‘Green Deal’, contact the Energy Advice helpline on: 0300 1231234.

Anyone receiving a suspicious call and requiring advice, should report the matter to Consumer Direct Wales on 03454 040506 (to speak in Welsh dial: 03454 040505).
