Aerobatic team swaps Petra for Swansea Bay

AN EXPERT aerobatic team will be swapping the ancient city of Petra for stunning Swansea Bay this summer

The Royal Jordanian Falcons have been confirmed to take part in the Wales National Airshow.

The award-winning ambassadorial team, formed in 1976, consists of five aerobatic aircraft. Their headquarters were recently transferred to the Jordanian city of Aqaba on the country’s Red Sea coastline to enhance tourism and investment in the area. Their training runs regularly see the aircraft pass over spots including the mountains of Wadi Rum and the ancient city of Petra – one of the world’s richest and largest archaeological sites.

Swansea Council is behind the Wales National Airshow, which is taking place on Saturday July 11 and Sunday July 12.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Regeneration, said: “The Royal Jordanian Falcons have an international reputation for precision, professionalism and spectacular performance. Their confirmation for the second day of the Wales National Airshow this summer is another major boost for an event that’s sure to live long in the memory.

“The combination of air displays and ground-based entertainment means we’re again expecting over 100,000 people a day to descend on the promenade and watch the action unfold in the skies above Swansea Bay. This is why the event is a key highlight of our varied Enjoy Swansea summer events programme that’s sure to put smiles on people’s faces.”

Other aircraft confirmed for the Wales National Airshow include a Chinook helicopter, a Eurofighter Typhoon and the return of the Red Arrows on both days of the event thanks to sponsorship and support from Swansea University. Two spitfires and a Lancaster from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will also take part, as well as RAF Sea King and Royal Navy Wildcat helicopters.
