AN HISTORIC Swansea folly dating back to the reign of King George IV is among a series of city properties now on the market.
The folly, located off Saunders Way in Sketty and originally known as the Belvedere, is a Grade II listed tower built between 1820 and 1830.
Follies are generally defined as non-functional buildings that were constructed to enhance a natural landscape.
The folly is among a series of properties Swansea Council is now looking to sell or lease. Further expressions of interest in leasing Swiss Cottage in Singleton Park are also being sought.
Cllr Rob Stewart, Swansea Council Leader, said: “All land and buildings owned by the council are under constant review as we look to make best use of our properties and become as efficient and lean as possible. The sale or lease of properties that are surplus to requirements is now more important than ever. We are committed to using every pound wisely, investing in and protecting services across the city and delivering more for the people of Swansea, even in very difficult financial times.
“Bids to redevelop the major Civic Centre sites in the city centre and Penllergaer have already been received and we hope the latest properties being marketed will build on the real buzz in Swansea at the moment and attract interest from the marketplace. The added potential regeneration of these latest properties on the market could breathe new life into buildings and communities throughout Swansea.”
Also for sale is land at Cwm Level Road in Landore, a former council depot off Pontardawe Road, the former OAP centre on Cwmgelli Drive in Treboeth, and nine industrial workshop sites with about 110 units at Swansea Enterprise Park and other locations.
