A new section of cycle path is set to be constructed along Swansea’s Fabian Way to help provide a key link to the new university campus development.

The Swansea University campus is set to open in September this year and Swansea Council has successfully bid for local transport grant funding from the Welsh Government to help fund the creation of the new cycle path,

Work on the new route will begin during June and will involve the widening of the existing pavement to create a shared cycleway and pavement for pedestrians – stretching from Fabian Way Park and Ride to Baldwin’s Bridge.

The £600k investment will also include the installation of new bus shelters along the way for public transport users.

Mark Thomas, Cabinet Member for Environment & Transportation, said: “Fabian Way is our busiest route into and out of the city centre and its essential we look at how the route needs to develop in the long term.

“The addition of the new university campus means we can expect more people to use public transport and other sustainable methods such as cycling to reach the site.

“The funding from the recent transport grant settlement has enabled us to work with our partners to make sure that a safe cycle and walking route is created to provide this alternative transport route for the public.

“It’s also important to ensure that this route is ready for the opening of the new campus in September this year.”

The Council has recently confirmed that the £2.7 million transport grant received for 2015/16 will also go towards restoring a historic bridge across the River Tawe connecting two sections of cycle network.

The construction of the Fabian Way shared cycle and pedestrian route will require an off peak (9.30am – 3pm) land closure along a small section of the route during the period of the works.
