SWANSEA Council has now completed more than half of a major computer system upgrade aimed at laying foundations for better online services than ever before.

The council’s IT team was hard at work over the weekend to kick-start a modernisation project that will benefit thousands of residents.

More works will be taking place between 5pm and 9pm on Tuesday June 16, Wednesday June 17 and Thursday June 18. This could affect some of the council’s online and phone-based services.

Cllr Clive Lloyd, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Transformation and Performance, said: “All big organisations like banks, local authorities and supermarkets have to close down some of their systems from time to time for essential maintenance and upgrades. Swansea Council is no different.

“Over half the upgrade was finished on the weekend, but more work is needed during the early evenings of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week.

“Some of our online services will inevitably be affected during these times, so we’d ask people to bear with us while we put the stepping stones in place for a far better system that will prove hugely beneficial for residents in future.”

The council already offers some online services, including booking Grand Theatre tickets and reporting potholes, littering and street light defects.

The modernisation programme will pave the way for more opportunities like that in future as well as allowing the setting up of computer systems so the council can take advantage of technological advances – some of which may have not have been thought of yet.

Cllr Lloyd said: “Our investment in improving our computer systems will save council taxpayers money in the years ahead because we’ll be able to get more things done more quickly and more efficiently.

“As the improvements kick-in over the coming months and years, customers will see and feel the benefits because they’ll be able to do business with us online at times which suit them rather than get on the phone or visit one of our offices.

“The work this week will ensure more progress is made on essential maintenance improvements and upgrades.”
