Spotlight on young carers

A group of Pembrokeshire councillors have gone back to the classroom to learn about the rights of young carers.

The councillors took to the computer to undertake a training programme as part of Carers Week – 8th June to 14th June.

Carers Week is an annual national campaign aimed at raising awareness of caring.

It highlights the challenges carers face and recognises the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the country.

Each year it is brought to life by the individuals and organisations who come together to organise activities and events throughout the country, drawing attention to just how important caring is.

As part of its duty to young carers Pembrokeshire County Council organised a training programme for its staff and councillors.

It highlighted the role of carers as well as the information and support on offer to them.

“Carers are one of the most vulnerable groups in society and it is our duty to care for them, as well as simply being the right thing to do,” said Councillor Mike James, Pembrokeshire Carers Champion.

There are an estimated 6.5 million people in the UK – and 15,000 in Pembrokeshire – caring unpaid for an ill, frail or disabled family member or friend.
