ADULTS across Swansea are getting the chance to try a brand new skill and perhaps discover a hidden talent in the process as part of a celebration of learning taking place this week.
Adult Learners Week is a national celebration running until June 20 and Swansea Council’s Lifelong Learning Team have organised free taster sessions from painting with watercolours to making music on iPads using the GarageBand app. All materials are provided.
Cllr Jen Raynor, Swansea Council Cabinet Member for Education, said: “Adult community learning provided by Swansea Council and its partners can offer people a new lease of life and enable them to play a more productive role in the community.
“People who take part in the courses not only gain new skills and confidence, but they also make new friends. These courses can provide a springboard into further education and training.
“I would urge people to check out what’s on offer and see what a difference it could make to their lives.”
Judith Porch from Swansea Council’s Lifelong Learning and Employment Training Service (LLETS) has been involved in the organisation of Adult Learners Week in the city alongside other members of the Swansea Learning Festival.
Judith said: “Since September last year LLETS has taken over 2,000 enrolments and our students tell us that attending our courses can be a life changing experience.
“This year we are proud to have entered four nominations for the Niace Cymru ‘Inspire’ Awards and we will be celebrating their achievements along with 20 other nominations from across Swansea at an Adult Learners Week presentation evening on Wednesday.”
Events include a watercolour taster at Dyfatty Community Centre on Tuesday June 16 from 2pm to 4pm. On Friday June 19, from 10am to noon, there will be a GarageBand taster at the Action Resource Centre (ARC) in Portmead.
