Pembrokeshire Schools to Drive Home Safety Message

Pembrokeshire County Council is to launch a campaign in September highlighting the dangers of illegal and irresponsible parking outside schools.

Despite the presence of School Keep Clear parking restriction markings outside school gates, many drivers persist in ignoring them.

Now the Council’s Road Safety and Parking Services teams are working with schools across the county to address the problem.

The campaign will raise awareness of the issue and hopefully make drivers think again about where they park when they take their children to school.

If motorists park on zig zag lines they may be subject to a Penalty Charge Notice (parking ticket).

“Traffic congestion, caused by parents parking their cars while they drop off or pick up their children, has been a longstanding issue for many schools,” said Councillor Rob Lewis, Cabinet Member for Transportation.

“Parking on the yellow zig zag School Keep Clear markings outside school gates is also a hazard to pedestrians including children going to and from school,” he said.

“These markings provide a clear area in which children can cross the road. It’s a site where they can see approaching traffic and drivers can clearly see them.”

As part of the awareness campaign schools will be encouraged to organise a banner design competition among pupils highlighting the message “Please do not park on our School Keep Clear Lines”.

Alternatively they can use a pre-designed banner from the road safety team.

The banners will be displayed prominently outside school gates to drive the message home to drivers.
