Changes to residential care services to be consulted

Neath Port Talbot Council is encouraging residents, carers and staff to have their say on proposed changes to residential care, intermediate care and short break services (sometimes known as respite).

They are consulting on proposed changes to the location and configuration of beds for these services.

The proposals include reducing the number of beds for the short break service and relocating it from Caewern in Neath to the recently refurbished Dan y Bryn in Pontardawe.

It is also proposed to transfer Intermediate care services from Llys Y Seren in Baglan and Caewern House in Neath to the new £5.6m care home, Plas Bryn Rhosyn which is currently being built on the Caewern site.

If both of these changes go ahead, the long-term care beds capacity in Llys y Seren would be increased.

The reason for the proposed changes is to ensure that the care services provided are responsive and flexible to meet the needs of older people. The changes would also accommodate the increasing demand for intermediate care and decreasing demand for short break care.

Cllr. Ali Thomas OBE, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council said:

“Maximising the number of adults who are able to live independently with or without support within the home of their choice within their community is a priority for the Council and making sure we have effective residential care, intermediate care and short break services is key to achieving this.
