“We can build on last season,” says Owens

Scarlets captain Ken Owens says the region can expect tough challenges in the forthcoming European Rugby Champions Cup but can also look to build on last season.

The Pool Draw was held today for 20 clubs from the Aviva Premiership, the Top 14 and PRO12 who have qualified on merit for the European competition with Scarlets drawn in to Pool 3 alongside Glasgow Warriors, Northampton Saints and Racing 92.

Captain Ken Owens gave his reaction to the draw whilst on a rest day from Rugby World Cup training camp with Wales.

Speaking after the draw Owens said: “It’s certainly an exciting group for us to be in. We’ve faced all three teams in the past and can definitely take something from previous encounters.

“We know a lot about Glasgow as we play them on a regular basis in the PRO12. They’ll be heading in to the new season with renewed confidence having been crowned PRO12 champions and despite losing some experienced quality players like DTH van der Merwe and Matawalu they’ve also recruited well.

“They’re a top side and will certainly be a challenge. We have beaten them in recent months and will take confidence from that. It’ll also be an exciting time for John (Barclay) and DTH to return to Scotstoun and I’m sure we can pick their brains!”

Owens went on to say: “We’ve come up against Saints quite regularly in Europe; they’re a very good side and finished top of the Aviva Premiership. George North is a world-class player and was something of a fans’ favourite here in West Wales. He’ll have a warm welcome I’m sure, but not too warm!”

Speaking about Racing 92, a team that All Black outside half Dan Carter will join after the World Cup, Owens said: “It’ll stand us in good stead that we’ve already taken on the challenge on Racing in the last few years. We put in some good performances and secured a victory on their patch a few seasons ago and despite losing quality players like Jamie Roberts and Jonny Sexton we will expect them to be a tough challenge.

“We will certainly take confidence in the players that we have recruited ahead of the new season and the strength of the squad we have here in West Wales. It’s an opportunity for us to build on last season and a challenge we’re all excited about.”
