CAN YOU RECYCLE 1 MORE THING?

This week is Recycle Week and we are asking residents can you recycle at least ONE more thing?

Research shows that three-quarters of householders could be recycling more and in particular, they could be recycling one or more items that they are putting in their black bags.

Recycle Week is taking place between June 22-28 and this year’s theme is ‘recycling around the home’.

Most people regularly recycle items like plastic milk bottles and glass jars from the kitchen, but it’s just as easy to recycle many other items from the bathroom, living room and even the bedroom!

Did you know empty aerosol cans, plastic coat hangers and toilet roll tubes can all be recycled in your blue bag?

In fact, you can recycle all kinds of everyday items from toothpaste boxes and shampoo/shower gel bottles through to bottle tops, receipts and envelopes.

We are currently recycling approximately 60% of our rubbish in Carmarthenshire, which is fantastic; but with a recycling target of 70% to reach by 2024/25, we need to be doing more or we could get fined (around £160,000 for every 1% below the target).

Council recycling officers will be in Carmarthen’s Guildhall Square on Wednesday, June 24 and in the St Elli Centre in Llanelli on Thursday, June 25 between 10am-3pm to advise residents on any recycling issues they may have.

Executive Board Member for Technical Services Cllr Hazel Evans said: “During Recycle Week we want to thank everyone for their recycling efforts. What’s currently recycled makes a huge difference, so just imagine what else could be achieved by recycling those items that are sometimes forgotten. We want people to think a little further than the kitchen and recycle items from other rooms in the home.

“If you have any recycling queries, please go along and speak to officers in Carmarthen and Llanelli town centres, they are there to help.”

Recycling around the home:

  • The bathroom has a whole heap of items that can be recycled such as cardboard toilet roll tubes and toothpaste boxes. Plastic shampoo and moisturiser bottles can all be accepted for recycling, along with liquid soap, bleach and bathroom cleaner bottles – just remember to remove any trigger top sprays or pump dispenser tops.
  • The bedroom is home to a variety of recyclable items, tissue boxes, old magazines and deodorant cans are all accepted in local recycling collections.
  • In the living room, newspapers, envelopes and cardboard packaging from online orders can be recycled, even air freshener aerosol cans.
  • There are a few items that sometimes get overlooked in the kitchen, such as breakfast cereal/dishwasher tablets boxes not to mention washing-up liquid bottles and plastic pots, tubs and trays too. Remember to look in the cupboard under the sink for plastic bleach and surface cleaner bottles which can also be recycled.
