ROADS, bridges and footways across Swansea are getting a major boost in coming months.

Swansea Council is investing just over £4.2 million in their maintenance and upgrade before the end of March next year.

The work is part of a programme of infrastructure improvements that will also include highway resurfacing, the replacement of some street lighting, the installation of dropped pedestrian crossings and repairs to highway retaining walls.

Car park resurfacing, coastal defence works in areas including Loughor foreshore and the replacement of some highway safety barriers are among the other planned schemes.

Cllr Mark Thomas, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Transportation, said: “This council, like all others across Wales, is facing a considerable financial challenge. It means that here in Swansea we have to save about £81 million over the next three years, but we continue to recognise how important the condition of the city’s roads and footways are for our residents. This is why we’ll be investing over £4 million in their repair and upgrade by the end of March next year. Parts of cycle paths will also be upgraded, some car parking will be resurfaced and further testing will be carried out on our street lights to identify columns that need to be removed and replaced. The combination of these works with many other highway infrastructure improvements will help keep the city moving as best as possible in the months and years ahead.”

Swansea Council’s Cabinet has now approved a programme of works that also includes measures to reduce flooding on highways and improve the River Tawe barrage infrastructure. Bridges on well-used roads and those that need strengthening will be prioritised for improvements.

Other works will include measures to mitigate the impact of windblown sand along the Swansea foreshore. Trial measures could be introduced with part-funding from Natural Resources Wales.

An allocation to deal with unadopted highways and infrastructure on a priority basis has also been given the green light.
