Carmarthenshire County Councillors have recently visited a rural golf course to see holiday and caravan accommodation provided with grant aid.

Glyn Abbey Golf Club – a proprietary golf course operated by L&S Leisure Ltd – has been assisted under the Strengthening Tourism Appeal of Rural Carmarthenshire scheme which is funded through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013.

Awarded the Welsh Golf Club of the Year in 2009, Glyn Abbey is a lead player in the Carmarthenshire Golf Group and together with Carmarthenshire County Council’s tourism department, is focusing on establishing the County as a top tourist golfing destination.

The two part project saw firstly the renovation of Fforest Fawr – a detached stone cottage in the heart of the golf course – to provide high quality self catering accommodation. The works included an outdoor decked dining area, patio, cycle store, drying room and barbecue area. The renovation has also added extra rooms to create a four-bedroom, three-bathroom facility that can accommodate up to eight guests at any one time.

The second part involved the development of a five pitch Caravan Club CL Site just above the Clubhouse giving caravan and motor home tourers doorstep access to both the golfing, gym, bar and catering facilities.

Glyn Abbey has received a £38,926 grant and the company is providing match funding.

Carmarthenshire County Council executive board member for regeneration and leisure Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “I’m delighted that we have been able to support Glyn Abbey to improve the facilities and attract more people to the area boosting the local economy.”

Executive board member for rural affairs Cllr Jim Jones said: “These are excellent facilities that will encourage rural tourism and give visitors a flavour of the local area whilst they enjoy sport and other attractions.”
