Rhys Meirion and a galaxy of stars will perform in a grand concert from the Pavilion Theatre in Rhyl to celebrate the start of the Lap of Wales Challenge – and you can enjoy the entertainment on S4C on Saturday, 4 July.
The challenge will take the tenor from Ruthin and a host of other stars across Wales using a variety of innovative ways including on the back of seaside donkeys, jet skis and tandem bikes.
Joining Rhys in the concert will be some of Wales’ most talented stars including Elin Fflur, Bryn Fôn, Tara Bethan, Sioned Terry, Joe Woolford of The Voice fame, Argentinian duet Alejandro and Leonardo Jones, Côr Rhuthun a’r Cylch choir, Lleisiau Menlli and Cytgan Clwyd. Keeping a tight rein on all the artists will be comedians Tudur Owen and Dilwyn Morgan.
The purpose of the trip is to raise awareness for the need to discuss organ donations and transplants as Wales prepares to become the first country in the UK to introduce an opt-out system for organ donation.
Rhys Meirion has been actively campaigning over the years to promote organ donation in Wales since the tragic loss of his sister Elen in 2012.
“The decision to grant permission for a loved one’s organs to be donated can often be fraught with uncertainty. But unless families talk about organ donation, people have no idea what their loved ones really want,” explains Rhys.
“The aim is simple, we want everyone in Wales to share their wishes regarding organ donation with their family. By visiting towns and villages across Wales, we want to provide people with information about the new legislation, and encourage them to talk about organ donation.”
Among the walkers joining Rhys will be Heno reporter Gerallt Pennant and S4C’s nightly magazine series will be following the Challenge team during the week (6-10 July). Also taking part are singer and actor Bryn Fôn, Rhys’ niece, Gwenllian Boyne, naturalist Iolo Williams and his son Dewi Williams, singer Tara Bethan, actress Ffion Dafis, comedians Tudur Owen and Dilwyn Morgan, mezzo soprano Sioned Terry and singer Alejandro Jones.
Singer and actor Bryn Fôn says, “I’m starting to worry about my lack of preparation for the The Lap of Wales Challenge! But I am ready for the launch concert in Rhyl and am looking forward to performing to an audience of supporters and to singing a duet with my new best friend – but I’ll keep that a surprise!”
