SWANSEA CITY’S £22m Morriston Comprehensive School rebuild has won its first major award and it’s not even been officially opened yet.
The school which has been radically-upgraded to be fit for generations of 21 century pupils to come has helped pick up a top award from the Welsh construction industry just weeks before it’s due to be officially opened.
The school upgrade, which includes state-of-the-art classrooms, a drama theatre, a meeting area along with energy efficiency and ICT innovations built-in, was completed earlier this year.
Despite the fact that more than 1,000 pupils attend the school it remained open for lessons throughout and now it’s helped Swansea Council collect a Constructing Excellence Wales ‘Client of the Year’ award.
David Hopkins, Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, said: “Anyone who’s been to Morriston Comprehensive School can only marvel. It’s the jewel in the crown of its community and will help raise pupil attainment for years to come.
“The CEW awards are handed out by the construction industry itself to client organisations they work with, recognising not only excellence in projects themselves, but also the quality of the collaboration between the two sides to get the work done.
“Morriston was completed on time, on budget and the whole time school life went on around it. It’s a terrific achievement and the award is richly-deserved.”
The CEW award for Swansea Council was for ‘Client of the Year’ and also recognises the council’s collaborative approach with the construction industry to other projects over the last year.
Martin Nicholls, the council’s Chief Operating Officer, was also recognised with the individual Achievers’ Award for his local and national contribution to the construction industry and in helping deliver Morriston Comprehensive and other projects on behalf of the council.
He said: “While I’m delighted to have been awarded this accolade, delivering major construction projects are, by definition, a team effort. Many people in the council’s education and housing teams as well as others in the Building and Property teams and our construction partners have significant roles in turning our expectations into realities like Morriston Comprehensive School.
“I think both awards demonstrate that all those involved in the Council are striving to make a real difference to our residents and wider business community and it is a great opportunity to sat thank you for their efforts.”
The upgrade of Morriston Comprehensive School was funded by the Welsh Government and Swansea Council. The work was completed earlier this year and it’s due to be officially opened in July.
As well as winning the Welsh awards both entries are put up against the winners from across the UK in the National Awards held in London in October
