Opera fans are in for a treat with the screening of live world-class opera direct to deckchairs in Castle Square on Friday night.

Royal Opera House Director of Opera Kasper Holten directs a mesmerising reading of tragicomedy Don Giovanni. Mozart’s masterpiece will be broadcast live from London’s Royal Opera House to Castle Square’s Big Screen on Friday evening (July 3) at 7.00pm.

Focusing on the power of the creative imagination, the acclaimed production is back again and will star Christopher Maltman in the title role.

Don Giovanni is an impulsive character who travels through Europe seducing women. This carefree life takes a turn when he commits a murder. Continuing to seduce women with his usual rapacity, Don Giovanni is haunted by the ghost of the murdered man and decides to invite him to dinner.

Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Regeneration, said: “The Big Screen in Castle Square is an incredibly versatile attraction and this summer it’s going to be host to a whole range of brilliant broadcast events. Don Giovanni is one of the greatest of Mozart’s operas.

“Even if you’re not normally an opera buff I’d encourage you to go because it’s a rare opportunity to enjoy live opera direct from the stage of the Royal Opera House completely free of charge.

“We’ll be laying on some deckchairs but bring your own and a picnic and blankets too. It promises to be a great night.”

Swansea Big Screen will be showing coverage of a variety of cultural and sporting events, along with Children’s Film Season throughout August, as part of the summer Enjoy Swansea Bay events programme.
