The Dylan Thomas replica writing shed has been recognised in a glittering awards ceremony.
The mobile unit was one of three shortlisted in the Arts and Business Cymru 2015 awards at the Wales Millennium Centre last week.
Nominated under the business category, the replica was created with local sponsorship from Castell Howell Ltd, Medway Builders and CLH Trailers.
Carefully created the mobile writing shed has the same curled pictures on the walls, a bookcase of poetry, Dylan’s ink-stained desk full of papers and his chair with a jacket slung on the back as if he had just popped out for a packet of cigarettes.
The council’s executive board for leisure, Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “We are absolutely delighted the replica shed was chosen as one of the finalists. Since its intricate creation it has travelled thousands of miles across land and sea and been embraced by so many people, children included. It’s a visitor attraction in its own right and we’re very proud of it.”
During its 12-month tour last year as part of the DT 100 celebrations it visited the NATO Summit, The Hay Festival, The British Ambassadors Garden Party in Dublin and was a passenger on the Stena Europe ferry to Ireland.
It has been seen by 1.8 million visitors, including 40 schools and 5,000 children. The shed also featured on several TV programmes – twice on the BBC UK National Breakfast news with 11million viewers.
The original shed sits above the Boathouse in Laugharne, Carmarthenshire, where Thomas lived with his wife Caitlin and three children, and where he penned some of his most famous works including Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night and Under Milk Wood.
