Plans to earmark land in Swansea for future development are continuing.
Swansea Council is in the process of preparing the Local Development Plan (LDP) which sets out how and where land is used and for what purpose.
A series of planning committees have recently been held to enable the public to give their views on approximately 100 candidate sites that have been proposed for inclusion in the plan.
Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development & Regeneration, said: “These planning sessions have enabled the public to present their views on sites that are being considered.
“One aspect of developing a sound LDP is the inclusion of views from residents and local businesses. This is something the Welsh Government insists on when councils are preparing their plans and that is what we have done throughout this process.
“There are still some site visits to be completed and many of the sites agreed during the latest phase will now be taken forward to full council for further consideration.”
In August 2014, the Council agreed the preferred strategy for the LDP which says that in the next decade or so the city will need land for more than 17,000 new homes and provide for 14,000 new jobs.
Penllergaer, Waunarlwydd, Fforestfach, Garden Village and Pontarddulais are some of the areas identified as Strategic Sites for development, whilst Felindre has been defined as a new Sustainable Settlement.
Cllr Davies added: “Swansea is a city which is constantly developing. We know that the population will increase significantly in the coming years and we need to ensure that this city can develop in the right way, providing adequate space for housing and for economic growth.”
When the final decisions have been made on which Candidate Sites will remain part of the LDP, the Council will publish a Deposit Plan which will confirm precise settlement limits and land allocations. This represents the next formal stage where people can have their say and is anticipated to take place during 2015.
