Worried about leaving your home empty while you go away on holiday this summer? Help is at hand in the form of security gadgets to put off burglars.

Holiday Watch is a pioneering holiday security equipment loan scheme established by Dyfed-Powys Police’s Neighbourhood Development Team with the support of the Carmarthenshire Community Safety Partnership.

The scheme was set up this spring to combat burglaries in Carmarthenshire after being successfully piloted in Durham where it received tremendous praise from the local community as well as cutting crime and reducing the fear of crime. It has already proved popular here too.

The scheme is being run by the Neighbourhood Development team in Llanelli who loan boxes containing security equipment to members of the public. It is aimed at anyone who has poor security measures or people with a high level of fear of a crime happening when they are away on holiday.

The person loaning the kit will attend a police station and sign the relevant documentation, they will then be given advice on where to place the equipment.

The Dyfed Powys Police force area is currently one of the safest areas in the UK and the aim is to make it even safer.

Carmarthenshire CCSP has provided funding for a limited number of packs consisting of a variety of security products in a secure box.

PC Dave White of the Neighbourhood Development Team said: “We are only the second police force to establish this scheme. There are a range of benefits including cutting crime rates, keeping away opportunist thieves, making vulnerable homes more secure while people are away on holiday, and reassuring the public.

“Since the scheme started this spring we have already had 100 people take up the offer.”

CSP manager Kate Thomas said: “This is an exciting scheme which is already bringing real benefits and it’s good that many people are already taking up the chance to loan security equipment while away on holiday.

“Holiday Watch builds on the work already being done to advise people to consider home security while away on holiday to ensure peace of mind.”

“I’m pleased that Carmarthenshire CSP was able to provide funding and support to get the scheme off the ground and I would urge householders to take advantage it of it by loaning the equipment.”
