More people are being encouraged to fill in a questionnaire to help shape the care of older people in Carmarthenshire.

Leader of the council Cllr Emlyn Dole said: “The exercise was crucial to shaping the county’s future strategy for looking after older people.”

He said they had learned a lot from the forms returned but he was sure there was more to be gathered and he was appealing for people to get involved.

A consultation on the 10-year vision of sustainable services for older people in the county was launched last month and concludes at the end of July.

Of more than 3,000 forms to councils, libraries and doctor’s surgeries more than 200 have been returned. Now there is a drive to get more people involved.

Tremendous challenges are faced by Carmarthenshire’s older people’s services with the population increasing and people living longer.

Carmarthenshire council currently spends £37million on social services for older people.

This budget is set to reduce over the next three years by £2.2million whilst the demand for services continues to rise in line with the older demographic profile of the county’s residents.

Executive Board Member for Social Care and Health Cllr Jane Tremlett said: “Older people are valued members of our communities and we must ensure that they stay healthy, active and independent in safe and age friendly communities.”

The forms are available at libraries, customer service centres and online.
