Move over McLaren, Mercedes and Marussia – a team from Ysgol Tycroes is celebrating becoming national champions and achieving a new world record.

Team Mint sped their way into the record books at the annual F1 Jaguar Primary School Challenge.

The team of four pupils was one of 30 from across the UK at the finals of the national competition.

Their car achieved a time of 0.929 seconds down the track, setting a new world record for the event.

The team was rewarded with a tour of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone and met many of the drivers.

Headteacher Elfed Wood said: “The competition is probably the biggest STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) challenge in the UK, if not the world, that a school can participate in.

“Hopefully it will lead to some of these pupils pursuing careers in these areas in the future.”

Carmarthenshire County Council education executive board member Cllr Gareth Jones said: “Well done to Team Mint and Ysgol Tycroes on their record breaking win and success on the national stage.

“To win this prestigious award demonstrates a high standard of key skills including design, teamwork, business acumen and manufacturing.

“Congratulations to the school, this is an accolade they should be very proud of.”
