The National Deaf Children Society’s(NDCS) bus recently visited Canolfan y Bryn Hearing Resource at Ysgol Penglais, Aberystwyth.

Pupils, families and support workers from across Ceredigion were able to access information about deafness, technology and communication, and to join in workshops and meet the NDCS staff.

Canolfan y Bryn Hearing Resource has been established as part of the development of provision for hearing impaired pupils within Ceredigion.

This resource caters for children and young people whose degree of hearing loss is a substantial barrier to their learning and progress. This resource is staffed by a specialist teacher and teaching assistants who have all obtained qualifications in British Sign Language, the language that is used by profoundly deaf people.

Pupils who are supported by Canolfan y Bryn have individualised programmes of learning in addition to signed supported learning within a variety of mainstream classes.

Hearing impaired pupils have access to all facilities and activities at Ysgol Penglais.

Councillor Hag Harris, Ceredigion County Council Cabinet Member for Education, said: “This resource provides much needed support for children and young people whose hearing are impaired, not only in the Aberystwyth area, but across Ceredigion. The benefits offered to them by this provision are immeasurable, and will aid them greatly during their important formative years.”
