TWO classic 1980s movies are being shown under the stars on a giant screen at Oystermouth Castle later this summer.

Swansea Council has teamed up with Luna Cinema to show both Top Gun and Dirty Dancing at the historic attraction.

Top Gun, the smash hit 1986 movie starring Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis, will be shown on Wednesday September 16 at 7.30pm. Dirty Dancing, a 1987 worldwide phenomenon starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, will be shown on Thursday September 17 at 7.30pm. The gates for both films open at 6pm.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Regeneration, said: “The screening of Skyfall and Les Miserables at Oystermouth Castle a few years ago was tremendously successful, so we’re delighted to have worked closely alongside Luna Cinema to bring a similar event back to the attraction later this year.

“These types of events are great because they replicate the feel of open air, drive-in movies in the USA. It’s also fantastic that Top Gun and Dirty Dancing are being shown because there’s lots of nostalgia for the 1980s nowadays and these were two of the decade’s most iconic films.

“The movie screenings form part of our Enjoy Swansea Bay events programme that’s truly got something for everyone.”

Movie fans are invited to bring picnic chairs and blankets along for the screenings, which will also have on-site facilities including a bar with a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Hot food and deli-style salads will also be served from a range of vintage vehicles, including a converted classic London black cab.

Other forthcoming events at Oystermouth Castle include an archaeology fun day on July 25. Outdoor theatre performance of Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Button, as well as a Midsummer Night’s Dream, will also be held at the historic attraction in mid-August.
