SWANSEA’S Local Service Board (LSB) is set to throw open its doors to the public for the first time later this month.

And, in another first, members of the public who attend will be able to ask face-to-face questions of board members about items on that meeting’s agenda.

The LSB is a joint effort between city business representatives, the voluntary sector and public organisations working together to tackle issues that matter to local residents.

Over the coming months it’ll be looking at major issues like independence among older people and domestic violence to see how the whole city can work effectively together to address them.

Rob Stewart, Leader of the Council and chair of the LSB, said: “The biggest issues and the major priorities our city has to deal with can’t be dealt alone by the council and other public sector organisations like health and the police.

“As chair of the LSB I was keen that we move our meeting into the public domain so the public can participate, engage and observe the work undertaken by this important body which brings together many key organisations. This was unanimously supported by all the members.”

He added: “The public sector doesn’t have a monopoly on good ideas or solutions. One of the greatest benefits of the LSB is that voluntary and business organisations can bring a different angle, expertise and experience to an issue which can make all the difference.

“The voluntary sector, for example, represent the many thousands of carers living in our communities without whom the social care system would simply wither away. That’s why they need to have a voice and the opportunity to offer insight and the LSB is one of the ways that happens.

“We’ve agreed to open up all our future meetings to the public so that they can see for themselves what influence it has on our communities and our city as a whole.”

The first meeting to be held in public will be on July 21 at 12.30 in Committee Room Two at the Civic Centre, Swansea.

Members of the public will be able to observe the meeting and ask questions of the LSB at the start of the meeting about any item on the agenda.

The agenda and papers for the meeting will be available on line from July 16 at www.swansea.gov.uk/lsb
