A Carmarthenshire sport and leisure officer has had her dreams realised after being selected for a world cup assignment.

Rhian Davies, will travel as squad development coach as part of the Welsh Netball team going to the world cup games in Sydney next month.

The 35 year old who has worked for the council’s sport and leisure team for the last eight years, will shadow the head coach at warm up sessions before heading to their first world cup game against Fiji on August 7.

Rhian said:  “It’s such an honour to be given the opportunity and I really want to take everything in and learn as much as I can.

“It will be an intense tour with so many games and so much travelling, but Australia is a hotbed for netball and it will be a chance to learn in the very best environment at the highest level of the sport.”

Pontarddulais resident Rhian, coaches the Welsh U17s, Junior Dragons, Llanelli’s Mini Merlins, Trinity St David and West Wales Netball teams.

The council’s senior sport and leisure manager, Carl Daniels said: “We are very proud of Rhian’s achievements so far, and so pleased to see her getting the opportunity to help lead the Welsh team in the Netball World Championships. Actif Sport and Leisure is all about getting people active, and Rhian is a great role model for us to have in our workforce demonstrating how we truly ‘practice what we preach’. We wish her the very best of luck for the forthcoming, exciting weeks.”
