Volunteers at Carmarthenā€™s Ty Hapus Family Centre are getting their hands dirty and have started composting.

The family centre, which is located in Park Hall, has a plot on the Parc Hinds allotments off Priory Street.

The councilā€™s recycling section has now donated a compost bin so that any garden waste can be composted along with any kitchen scraps such as vegetable peelings and teabags from the centre.

Ty Hapus already helps to promote recycling within the community, with glass and textiles banks for residents to use, and acting as a pick-up point for blue bags.

Executive Board Member for Technical Services Cllr Hazel Evans said: ā€œWe are happy to support the family centre as we are trying to raise awareness on the benefits of home composting.

ā€œAbout a third of our household waste can be composted including prunings, vegetable peelings, egg shells, tea bags and shredded paper.ā€

The council sells compost bins for a discounted price of Ā£12 including delivery. For further information visitĀ www.carmarthenshire.gov.uk/compostingĀ or call Carmarthenshire Direct on 01267 234567.
