Some 350 children attended the launch of a new project that will help them learn to ride a bike in school.

Children as young as two joined in Toddlebiking, Actif Story Time and Play to Learn activities at Llanelli Leisure Centre as part of The Early Years Cycling scheme.

Year 1 and 2 pupils got involved with the Balanceability and multi skills sessions, whilst the older ones took part in sessions with officers from Welsh Cycling testing their abilities on a cycling skills course.

It comes after the council’s sport and leisure team secured funding for the one year project involving 18 schools. The aim is that each child will progress through the cycling journey by using age and ability specific equipment especially designed for toddlers and young children aged 2-7.

Each school has received 10 balance bikes, one pedal bike, 10Toddlebikes, 10 helmets and child friendly road safety equipment such as stop and go signs, road cones and zebra crossing. Teachers have also received training from the sport and leisure team.

Carmarthenshire County Council leader, Emlyn Dole said: “It was great to be able to attend the launch and hear of the benefits the project will have on children in Carmarthenshire. It’s an excellent opportunity for all young children to learn to ride at an early age. With the equipment and training the schools can continue to deliver this for years to come.”

Sport and leisure officers will also assist each school in completing a three-year Cycling Action Plan which will link in to cycling opportunities in the local community.

Community sessions are also being offered throughout the year at Llanelli Leisure Centre, 01554 774757; Newcastle Emlyn Leisure Centre 01267 224731, and local community facility, Cefneithin Hall 01269 517594. Anyone interested in registering their children on the community sessions can book by phoning the relevant centres.
