WORKS to replace Ammanford College Bridge with a new structure will start today!

The bridge replacement scheme will have a construction period of 12 weeks.

The existing bridge will be replaced with a 3.6 metre span structure comprising of precast concrete box culvert units to accommodate traffic of up to 40 tonnes.

The C2130 road will be closed to traffic for the first five weeks up until August 28 with diversions signposted.

The works have been programmed to coincide with the summer holidays in a bid to minimise disruption to road users.

Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout with a temporary footbridge in place.

The scheme which is costing £70,000 was designed in-house by Street Scene officers and the construction work will be carried out by the council’s Direct Labour Organisation.

The works are due to finish on October 16.

Executive Board Member for Technical Services Cllr Hazel Evans said: “Our bridges are regularly inspected and following a structural assessment of Ammanford College Bridge it was found to be sub-standard in terms of its load carrying capacity.

“This is an essential replacement scheme and although it will cause some inconvenience to road users hopefully disruption will be kept to a minimum.

“We have an ongoing programme of works to bring county bridges up to standard despite very limited resources.”
