Pembrokeshire Secondary School pupils have been learning about alcohol.
One hundred and forty sixth-formers from Ysgol Dewi Sant in St David’s and Milford Haven and Pembroke secondary schools took part in a BIIAB approved Alcohol Awareness course recently.
The course, which was provided by Pembrokeshire Youth – Pembrokeshire County Council’s youth service, informed youngsters about the social, economic, career and health impacts of alcohol.
It was the third year the programme has been delivered and was the most comprehensive covering a wide variety of alcohol related topics.
This included looking at the licensed retail industry, licensing laws and offences and how the industry promotes and regulates responsible drinking.
The course also looked at how alcohol affects the body, its links to sexual health, the dangers of drink-driving and binge drinking as well as how alcohol affects society – its positive impact on jobs and the economy and the strains it can put on communities and services.
The course was delivered by youth workers, specialist substance misuse and sexual health workers, police officers and PCSO’s, as well as a representative from Pembrokeshire County Council’s licensing department. It was accredited through local training company Sara Safety Solutions
“The course is a recognised qualification which helps young people to become more employable in the licensed retail industry, from working in bars and restaurants, to seeking work in the brewing industry,” said Senior Youth Worker, Chris Powles.
“It also served as a reminder to young people of the need for a sensible approach to their own alcohol consumption at a particularly relevant time of year for those who are about to embark on their summer holidays.”
He said the feedback from pupils had been extremely positive.
“We hope to continue to run this course in future to ensure that young people get the most accurate advice about alcohol consumption, while also improving their employment opportunities.”
