Further funding for traineeships announced by Deputy Minister

Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology, Julie James has delivered more good news for vocational learners by announcing funding of almost £90 million for traineeships in Wales.

During a visit to Rathbone Training in Swansea, where she met young people involved in training programmes, the Deputy Minister confirmed the EU has approved funding of £28 million towards a total investment of £89 million for traineeships in Wales. This will provide support for 24,762 young people over the next four years.

The Welsh Government’s Traineeship Programme is a training programme for 16-18 year olds not otherwise engaged in education or employment. The programme seeks to improve skill levels through the delivery of entry level qualifications up to NVQ Level 2.

The announcement follows confirmation last month of funding of £284million towards 94,000 apprenticeships in Wales over the next four years with the EU contributing £83million.

Today’s announcement also comes on the same day Economy Minister, Edwina Hart opens a training facility and visitors’ centre as part of the Welsh Government’s EU-funded A465 Heads of the Valleys Dualling Project. The centre will be used by schools, colleges, universities and other local groups who wish to learn more about the construction industry.

“Our Traineeship Programme helps young people who want to work but need that extra helping hand.  68% of learners who left the Traineeships programmes in 2013-14 had a positive progression into employment or learning at a higher level”.

“Thanks to flagship programmes like traineeships and apprenticeships, we are enabling thousands of young people to develop vital skills that will help them progress on their chosen path of employment, education or further training”.

Finance Minister Jane Hutt welcomed the EU investment:

“This is another positive example of how the Welsh Government is investing EU Funds to achieve our goals and support our young people to improve their career prospects.”

Rathbone Training provides access to training and qualifications that enable young people to achieve their goals. It also provides youth engagement programmes, which offer practical support and positive experiences through activities like sport, music or art.
