Neath Port Talbot Council has received over £800,000 funding from Welsh Government to deliver their Road Safety and Safe Routes in Community priorities.
Work on a number of schemes will soon be underway across the County Borough in Port Talbot, Pontardawe, Jersey Marine village and communities in the Swansea Valley.

They will include traffic calming measures, installation of speed warning signs, footway improvements and cycle path provision.

One of the Council’s priorities is to improve road safety around schools and work there includes the introduction of parking controls at Rhydyfro Primary school, and installation of guard rails and improvements to the footpath at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg in Pontardawe.

Also on the list is the provision of additional crossing points at Eastern Primary School in Taibach and speed warning signs outside Llangwig Primary school in Ynysmeudw.

At Jersey Marine, the speed limit will be extended with an introduction of a 40mph limit to Llandarcy and the A4067 Pontardawe will see speed limits introduced either side of the approach to the Tesco roundabout.

A series of driver/rider training initiatives have also received support with the aim to reduce casualties amongst vulnerable road user groups. These popular schemes are designed for both the newly qualified and more mature driver; alongside these, training courses will also be delivered for new and experienced motorcyclists within the County Borough.

More details of these and other training initiatives can be found at www.nptroadsafety.co.uk or by calling the road safety team on (01639) 686828

Cllr. Ali Thomas OBE, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council said: “We are delighted that the Minister has chosen to support our vision for safer communities through a series of engineering and road safety training schemes for our residents.

“We look forward to working closely with Welsh Government on further developments to enhance road safety within Neath Port Talbot”
