From fleece to carpet – a woolly journey

Have you any idea what happens to wool after it’s been sheared? And for what, expect jumpers, can you use one of the most versatile products in the world?

In a special programme of popular weekly countryside and farming show, Ffermio, the presenters will trace the journey of Welsh wool from sheep to carpet.

In the programme, to be broadcast on Monday 17 August, presenter Alun Elidyr is in the heat of the action at Corwen Shearing Competition, where a number of the top shearers around the world competed to be crowned the champion.

Meinir Howells meets a squad of sheep shearers in Ceredigion who travel around the country with their work, while Daloni Metcalfe visits the Baavet company in Harlech, where pillows and duvets are filled and insulated with wool from nearby farms.

The journey also takes us beyond the border – to Bradford – where we have an opportunity to see what happens to wool after leaving the farm and how the wool is treated.

Ffermio producer, Gwawr Lewis, said, “There is evidence to suggest that wool has been in use for centuries – but do people nowadays really know about its journey from the farm to the shop?

“While the woollen industry has gone through challenging times over the last few years, there is room for hope following a strong performance over the past 12 months. And I hope that the programme will make viewers think again about the work that goes into turning wool into products which are available to the consumer.”
