GROW YOUR CONFIDENCE AND YOUR VEGETABLES

The health benefits of ‘growing your own’ go beyond the natural goodness that comes from organic fruit and vegetables – the fresh outdoor air and gentle exercise can do wonders for your body and mind.

During National Allotments Week (August 10-16), there is no better time to dig out your wellies, slip on your gardening gloves, and get shovelling! There are several allotment sites in Carmarthenshire – some have individual plots you manage yourself, or – if you’d prefer a helping hand – a community allotment maybe more suitable.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s community engagement team, part of Housing Services, have helped set up several allotments as under its Pride In Your Patch project. They are run by community volunteers, and anyone can join in. They include allotments in Dwyfor, Llwynhendy, and Cefneithin in the Gwendraeth Valley. For details, email communityengagement@carmarthenshire.gov.uk or call 01554 899288.

Plots are also available at the Llannon community allotment, run by the Llannon Community Allotment Group. Contact Phil Snaith on pjsnaith@yahoo.co.uk or 01269 832205.

Carmarthen and Llanelli Town Councils have individual allotment sites. In Carmarthen, Five Fields, is accessed off Monument Hill, and Parc Hinds, accessed from Priory Street. Contact Town Clerk Selwyn Thomas on 01267 235199 or visit www.carmarthentowncouncil.gov.uk. In Llanelli, allotments are located at Coronation Road and Sunninghill Terrace. Contact Town Clerk Mel Edwards on 01554 774352 or visit www.llanellitowncouncil.gov.uk.
