SALAMI, flavoured ciabatta bread and Parmesan cheese will bring a flavour of Italy to Swansea city centre later this month.

The products will be among many featured in a specialist Italian market that will be available on Oxford Street from Thursday August 20 to Sunday August 23.

A selection of pasta, cannoli, nougats, olives, biscuits, nuts, olives and olive oils will be among the other products on sale.

Swansea Council is bringing the attraction to the city centre in partnership with a company called Med Food.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Regeneration, said: “We’ve announced exciting regeneration proposals for the city centre, but events like this are important as well because they add vibrancy and variety to the pedestrianised area.

“The arrival of the Italian market will give people the chance to peruse foods from the Mediterranean that mightn’t ordinarily be available on our doorstep here in Swansea. These type of attractions also help attract more people into the city centre as a whole, boosting other traders in the process because of extra footfall and spending.

“The market will combine with the World Party event on the Saturday it’s there to generate an international, family-friendly atmosphere.”

The World Party event in Castle Square will celebrate Swansea’s cultural diversity with a selection of global cuisine, demonstrations, have-a-go activities and international arts and crafts. Representatives of Swansea’s Ukrainian, Sri Lankan, Filipino, Thai and Polish communities will be among those celebrating.

The Italian market will be made up of a series of red, white and green stalls. It will be open on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9am to 5.30pm, and then on the Sunday from 10.30am to 4.30pm.
